Lauri Supponen (b. 1988) is a composer for whom composition is an act of dreaming of alternative forms of organisation. Hailing from Brussels and Helsinki, he studied composition at Royal College of Music in London and Universität der Künste in Berlin, graduating from Sibelius Academy in 2016. Lauri’s works have been premiered by leading contemporary music ensembles such as Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern and BBC Singers at festivals around Europe and North America.
Interested in the many relationships sound has with its environment, Lauri often writes music as a continuum, cutting pieces out every now and then. He rarely creates independent, coherent and enclosed works but instead wants the framework of music to remain open for influences and visitations. His works often form cycles that explore a thematic across several works. Close collaboration with instrumentalists forms the nucleus of his method. He also works with dancers, visual artists and other composers. Supponen’s work happens at the intersection of music, dance, visual art and theatre, nurturing the playfulness and creation that happen in between structures.
As a curator Lauri has been involved with award-winning contemporary music festivals such as Ung Nordisk Musik, Whatever works and Nordic Music Days. Lauri performs as an oboist and contrabassist with past appearances at Flow Festival Helsinki and Tallinn Music Week as an improviser with Korvat Auki Ensemble and ainoregina. He is the co-principal contrabassist of the Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra (YS).
